“Wallace The Wiggly Worm” as an orchestral piece, has a slow personality, highlighted in the pondering eighth notes. The piece possesses a wonderful little melody which is presented by the violins and supported by the lower strings. Chromaticism is certainly highlighted in “Wallace”, so I would suggest that the orchestra start with the chromatic scale of D Major using quarter and half notes. Once the students get comfortable with the left hand movement, then add the rhythm patterns as suggested. As with all of the Kantata Studio beginner’s compositions there is a scale and the rhythms needed in order to place this piece. The rhythmic warmups are almost as much fun as the piece itself.
